Ageing is a fact of life. Since more and more people are living to, what used to be called, a great age, there is an even more pressing need to find ways to free the process from ill health, anxiety and mental deterioration.

I very much welcome the recently formed partnership between Help the Aged and the University of Edinburgh in this Research into Ageing project. The purpose of the Disconnected Mind Appeal is to raise the funds necessary to support this important project.

This is not quite like any other branch of medical research. In this case we know that most of us will inevitably be affected by ageing. Support for the Disconnected Mind Appeal is therefore simply a matter of enlightened self interest.

I believe the goals and ambitions of 'The Disconnected Mind' research team are something we should all support. Not just those of us, who like me, have witnessed the devastating effects of age related dementia in a loved one. Professor Deary and his world class team are engaged in leading cutting edge research with visionary goals which will provide benefits not only in society today but also in the longer term for future generations. At a time when we are living longer and hopefully vital lives I encourage you t join me in supporting the 'Disconnected Mind' fundraising appeal to ensure the long term success of this inspirational work.

I was inspired to support The Disconnected Mind because of my family's experiences. Both my wife and I had relatives who were affected by Dementia and Alzheimer's, the real satisfaction though comes from actually getting involved and meeting the people who run this Appeal and even more importantly, the researchers whose work is benefitting from it. I have been to Edinburgh and the work they are doing is truly fascinating.
